Department of Nursing Sciences

The goal of the Department of Nursing Education is to help meet the country’s need for well-trained nurses at the level of Bachelor’s of Science and Master’s of Science in Nursing.  Access to a well-equipped, high-level teaching hospital for clinical experience provides the capstone clinical competence following didactic nursing education.  In addition, patient-care experiences are provided to the students beginning in year one alongside the basic science classes. Student-centered, active learning is emphasized throughout the curriculum.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)

A Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing will provide a complete BSN degree for candidates who have A-level science entry qualifications.  Thanks to good clinical supervision in a well-functioning, high-level hospital that is included in the training, the quality of the training is superior, producing very well-trained, compassionate nurses. A one-year bridge training is planned to upgrade State Registered Nurses to a Bachelor of Nursing degree. This program offers diploma nurses an opportunity to advance their careers and to improve the hospital and outpatient services where they are employed.

Bachelor of Science in Nurse Anesthesia

Bachelor’s of Science in Nurse Anesthesia – Well-functioning hospitals need nurse anesthetists with both an academic understanding of the patient and anesthesia plus the clinical expertise and experience to give both safe and effective anesthesia care in the operating room.  The program director for the new nurse anesthesia bachelor’s degree is completing his Anesthesia residency training and the plan is to begin the nurse anesthesia degree program when he returns in two years.

Master of Sciences

Master’s of Science Nurse Practitioner

This course will upgrade the current nurse practitioner certificate program (offered to SRN nurses) to a Master’s level program, similar to those in North America.  This new Master’s program will provide nurses entering with a BSN degree with a robust didactic course and extensive precepted clinical training.  Students will participate in many of the Internal Medicine training opportunities provided at Mbingo.

Nurse Practitioners

Nurse Practitioners have proven to be very valuable throughout CBC Health Services in offering high-quality clinical services in general medicine, oncology, pediatrics, and TB-HIV Care and Treatment.  With the higher entry qualifications (Bachelor’s of Nursing degree) the Master- level nurse practitioners will provide even higher-level health care.  Specialty training may also be developed in areas such as Pediatrics, Mental Health, Oncology, Surgery, and Internal Medicine.

Department of Allied Health Science

Physiotherapy – Before 2021, the physical therapy training offered by the CBC was a one- or three-year training.  A Bachelor’s-level physiotherapy program will begin in  October 2021. The CBC has had a long-term commitment to assisting patients with disabilities beginning with the establishment of Mbingo as a leprosy settlement in 1952.

Medical Imaging - There is a large need for well-trained x-ray, ultrasound, and CT technicians in the CBCHS and Cameroon.   The imaging department at Mbingo is well-developed and able to offer high-quality practical experience in these areas.  Faculty for the course are being recruited and a curriculum will be developed in the near future.

Laboratory sciences – Mbingo currently has a well-developed and staffed clinical laboratory under the supervision of a board-certified clinical pathologist.  The curriculum will be developed in the near future.

Occupational therapy - An Occupational Therapy program is planned in the future to meet the needs of people living with disabilities, children, youth, and adults.
